Highlights Of The Month: August 2017

I kinda secretly love September, even though its arrival means that summer is over. I guess it’s a bit of a hangover from school days when September ushered in a new year, new stationary (which basically was theeee most exciting thing ever), seeing your friends again after a long summer apart and tons of new exciting challenges and adventures. So, even though I’m kinda sad that August is ending, I’m also kinda excited, too. From the adidas EQT launch to Notting Hill Carnival and more, check out the highlights of August below…

Endless Beaut Exhibition

Being somewhat hailed as the ‘new Banksy’, London based artist Endless has quiiite the buzz around him, and with good reason. Taking over The Exhibitionist Hotel in South Kensington this month, the artist – who is the protegee of legends Gilbert & George – had on display some of his eye-catching work, which is most known for its critique of a modern, consumer culture. Focusing on brand advertising and its affects on our perception of beauty, the exhibition features portraits of the likes of Cara Delevingne, Naomi Campbell and even the Queen! “Soon, the way we look, feel and think will be driven entirely by brands, which are working harder and smarter towards taking over our lives,” he said, in an interview. The exhibition is on till September 30th.

PF Chang’s Restaurant Launch

PF Chang’s is quite the powerhouse over in the US, where it’s one of the best and most famous Asian restaurants around. This month, they opened their doors over on this side of the Atlantic, and I went along to their launch party with a couple of my foodie friends where we proceeded to gorge ourselves on some of the most delicious canapés we’ve ever tasted in general, let alone in bite-size fashion at an event. Currently finding any and all excuses to return for a proper, seated meal.

I headed over to my home country for a ten day much needed holiday where I (tried to) turn off my phone and have somewhat of a digital detox. Easier said than done the first few days were preeetty tough and I kept accidentally finding myself on Instagram. After that, it felt suuuper refreshing to be living in the moment and *actually* spending time with my friends and family in what is hands down one of the most beautiful beaches in the whole entire world #ThisIsEgypt.

Harpers Bazaar Arabia

I feel like I’ve been dragging on these references to Harpers Bazaar Arabia for, like, evs, but my oh my are they the gift that keeps giving. This month, they uploaded a behind the scenes video from my feature in the July/August issue of the magazine onto their website and I looove it. Check it out below.

adidas EQT Launch

adidas are positively killing the game right now. Surrounding the launch of their new EQT’s, the sportswear brand threw like 10 parties in as many days in London, and they all boasted queues around the block; such is the demand for anything and everything three striped. Marking a return to function and a move away from excess, the trainer is super cool with a stream-lined fit. They gifted me an all white pair which I am terrified to wear outside for fear of ruining them. I attended the opening night of the EQT creator studio which saw Jamie xx and Giggs taking to the stage. Giggs positively killed it with his endless amount of tunes.

Over Under Cafe Sessions

My veeery favourite coffee shop in London is Over Under coffee which is based around the corner from my house and has the very best matcha I’ve ever tasted which, considering my current obsession for all things matcha, is quite the statement. This month, they hosted the second of their live music nights ‘Over Under Cafe Sessions’ where my friend Lovelle, an incredibly dope singer took to the stage where she proceeded to hypnotise a rapt audience.

BBC Asian Network With Preeya Kalidas

This month marked my third appearance on Preeya Kalidas’ Life Out Loud panel on BBC Asian Network. I always love joining Preeya and her guests on the show because we have fab chat about interesting topics that tend to affect bi-culturals. This month, we talked about embarrassing parents and when they say things that are just like ‘woaaah, no mum.’ Listen back here.

Soho Farm House With Cointreau

This month, Cointreau took over Soho Farm House’s greenhouse with their cocktail making masterclasses. They invited me to spend the night in one of Soho Farm House’s super cool glamping tents ahead of attending a masterclass. I invited my bestie Rox to join me and we had such a lovely time cosy-ing up with the wood-burner in the tent, taking a dip in the jacuzzi and chilling by the pool, as well as of course getting some Cointreau cocktail making expertise from great, great, great-grandson of the brand, Alfred Cointreau himself.

Notting Hill Carnival

Literally could not love Notting Hill Carnival anymore than I already do. The happiest, smiliest, danciest weekend of the year sees around a million revellers take to the streets of Notting Hill to partake in Caribbean culture, drink rum punch, eat jerk chicken and twerk (or, attempt to twerk) to some of the bounciest, happiest music around. Can you tell Carnival makes me (and the rest of its million die-hard fans) delirious with happiness? This year, I did Carnival very much in style, spending almost the entirety of the two days on my friend Jason’s AtHome float, which was sponsored by Captain Morgan. adidas also teamed up with Zone 2 for a private party brilliant ending to Carnival which saw everyone from Kojo Funds to Kano and more take to the stage. See more about the party on Complex here.

Shooting For Girl VS Cancer

The stigma around cancer is a persistent one. On this day last year, a good friend of mine, Lauren Mahon of Girl Stole London found out she had breast cancer. She proceeded to be a fucking bawse – in her customary fashion – and fight the hell out of it, seeking to raise awareness and garner some change along the way. She managed, on both counts. Ahead of Breast Cancer Awareness month this October, Lauren is launching season two of her #GirlVSCancer tit-tees. She invited me along to take part in the shoot, along with some other awesome digital mavens the likes of Reem Kanj, Mama Pukka, Hannah Louise F and Carrie of WishWishWish, to name a few. The tees are suuuper cool and feature watermelons, bee stings, jugs and all sorts of other tittee innuendo. Check out more here.

1. Why I’m No Longer Talking To White People About Race – Reni Eddo-Lodge

One of the most important books that I’ve read, or that has been published lately. An unapologetic look into white privilege and the subtle (and not so subtle) racism and state of affairs for black and people of colour in 2017 (just switch on the news for further proof!) A wake up call to a world somewhat in denial and imperative reading.

2. The Misadventures Of Awkward Black Girl – Issa Rae

Written by the brains, and the face, behind HBO hit ‘Insecure’, The Misadventures Of Awkward Black Girl is a super-relatable and hilarious collection of essays which chronicle what it’s like to be unabashedly awkward in a world that regards introverts as misfits, and black as cool.
